Hyewon Chung
정혜원, Program Director
Hyewon Chung is a music educator, composer, and arranger. She has been teaching music since 2010, specializing in Yamaha music courses and the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM). She earned a diploma in composition and arrangement from the Conservatory of Muse in Tokyo, Japan, and a master’s degree in music from Sangmyung University Graduate School in Seoul, South Korea. Deeply impressed by her creative musical approach, the university invited her to start her career as an instructor immediately after graduation.
Hyewon actively participated in various music activities throughout elementary and high school, including school choir and accompaniment. In addition to music, she was frequently selected to perform in school dance events. Recognizing her talent, her dance teacher encouraged her to major in dance at Hansung University in Seoul, South Korea, where she specialized in modern dance with a minor in Korean dance. Her dance background later contributed to her ability to compose dance music and collaborate with dancers on performances.
After completing her music studies in Japan and returning to Korea, she performed and taught music at Youngchang Piano, a Korean piano company. When Yamaha Japan established a branch in Korea, she was among the first members to work as a trainer and educator, mentoring the company’s demonstrators.
Hyewon immigrated to Winnipeg in 2007 and had the opportunity to participate in the Winnipeg Music Festival as an accompanist for her children’s elementary school choir. At the time, she didn’t speak English well and doubted she would have the chance to play music or become a music educator. However, a young girl approached her and said, “I like your piano playing,” which gave her the courage to pursue teaching. She now teaches children at a music school, with students ranging in age from 3 to 18, and she finds great joy in making music with them. Some of her students have performed their own original compositions and have been invited to perform in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, and Los Angeles.
Hyewon enjoys making music with her students and collaborating with her colleagues. Just as people were kind to her when she first arrived in Winnipeg, she now hopes to support and encourage others in the same way.
